A goal-based approach for selecting a ship's polar class

Following the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code), ships operating ice-covered polar waters must comply with an appropriate Class (PC) or equivalent ice class standard. For selection of Class, ship designers and operators are encouraged to use Operational Limit Assessment Risk Indexing System (POLARIS). A limitation POLARIS is that it does not consider extent which a operates various conditions, thus also probabilistic nature loading. To address this limitation, article outlines goal-based approach intended complement when selecting ship's Class. proposed approach, appropriateness minimum required as determined using evaluated by assessing long-term extreme loads, relating these design loads behind considered account loading, calculates considering its profile expected exposure. This achieved synthesising modified version so-called event-maximum method, discrete-event simulations, satellite data. The utility demonstrated through case study, used select double-acting year-round independent operations along northeast coast Canada.
